A farm fence is not about looks. It is about keeping cattle, nilgai, thieves and neighbours out season after season. How long it lasts depends on the materials, how it is installed and how it is maintained.
Most failures come from one of three mistakes: posts too far apart, wire too thin for the animal, or no plan for the corners. This guide sets out a plan you can hand to a contractor.
Step 1: decide what the fence is for
| Threat | Fence that works |
|---|---|
| Stray cattle, goats | Barbed wire, 4 to 5 strands |
| Nilgai, deer | Chain link or welded mesh, 5 to 6 ft high |
| Thieves, boundary dispute | Chain link topped with barbed or concertina |
| Poultry, small animals | Chicken mesh or hexagonal mesh at the base |
| Crop protection from birds | Net over frame, not a fence |

Step 2: pick the wire
- Barbed wire: The cheap, fast boundary. It marks a line and stops cattle. Not for nilgai, which jump.
- Jhatka machine wire: High tensile wire that carries a small charge from a jhatka machine. It holds off wild boar and nilgai without a tall fence.
- Chain link: Strong, tall and long lasting. The best all-round choice for a house plot or orchard.
- Welded mesh: Stiff panels or rolls for gates and enclosures.
- Concertina coil: For the top of a wall or for sites where security matters.
Step 3: choose the posts
Posts decide how long the fence lives.
- MS angle: The standard post. 40 x 40 or 50 x 50 mm for most farms. Angle takes holes for wire, is easy to weld, and is strong in the ground. Paint or galvanise it.
- FRP rods: Light and rust free. Good for barbed wire and jhatka runs.
- Concrete posts: Good for the permanent compound.
A rough guide:
- Line posts every 3 to 3.5 metres for chain link, every 3 to 4 metres for barbed wire.
- Corner and gate posts heavier and set in concrete, with a diagonal brace.
- Height 7 feet of post for a 5 foot fence. Two feet goes into the ground.

Step 4: build the corners first
Wire pulls. A corner post that leans will drag every post in the line with it. Set corners and ends in concrete, brace them diagonally, and strain the wire against them. Line posts are only guides.
Step 5: tension and tie
Pull the wire tight with a strainer before you tie it. Tie it to the posts with GI wire or binding wire. Slack wire is the first thing a cow leans on.
A sample material list
For a closed 100 metre perimeter (four sides of 25 m, no gate opening) with a 5 foot chain link fence on angle posts, line posts about every 3 m:
| Item | Quantity |
|---|---|
| 5 ft chain link, in rolls | About 100 m |
| MS angle 40 x 40, 7 ft posts | About 33 posts in all: 4 corner posts and about 29 line posts |
| Cement and sand | For corner post footings |
| 2 or 3 rows of GI tension wire | 300 m |
| Binding wire | 5 kg |
| Barbed wire on top | Optional, 100 m x 3 strands |
These are working numbers for the assumptions above. Each gate opening adds two heavier gate posts and takes its width out of the roll length; a plot that is not square changes the corner count. For your plot, tell us the length, the height and the animal, and we will make the list.
