A Buyer's Guide to Siyaganj: How to Buy Iron and Hardware in Indore's Wholesale Market

If you buy iron and hardware in Indore, sooner or later you end up in Siyaganj. It is crowded, loud and the lanes are narrow. It is also where you find the range, the wholesale rate and the person who can tell you what you actually need.

This guide is the one we wish every first-time buyer had.

What Siyaganj is

Siyaganj is Indore's old wholesale trading quarter. Wire, mesh, pipes, tools, nails, fasteners, sheets and construction hardware are sold from shops that line the lanes, many of them run by the same families for generations. Loha Mandi, the iron market, is close by for structural steel.

Our shop, HM Ibrahim & Co, has been at 60 Siyaganj Main Road, opposite Tijori Gali, since 1939.

When to go

• Weekday mornings are the best time to come. The lanes are quieter, stock has just been put out and the staff are free to talk.
• Avoid the hour before closing and the day before festivals, when the whole market is buying.
• Sunday most shops are closed.
• Check hours: we are open Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 8 PM.

What to bring

1. The list with sizes, quantities and units. "Wire mesh" is not a list. "GI weld mesh, 1 inch, 14 gauge, 3 feet wide, 10 rolls" is.
2. A sketch or photo of the job, if it is for fencing, a gate, a grill or a roof.
3. Samples. A piece of the old wire, a sample nail, a photo of the old sheet.
4. A vehicle plan. Long bars and mesh rolls need a tempo or a truck, and the lanes are tight.
5. Your GST number, if you want a tax invoice.

How to compare rates

Rates are quoted per kilo, per piece, per metre or per roll. Before you compare:

• Same unit. Convert everything to rate per kg or rate per metre.
• Same spec. Gauge, size, grade and coating must match. A thinner wire at a lower rate is not cheaper.
• Same brand. Branded and unbranded are different products.
• Same terms. Is GST included? Is cutting free? Is delivery included?

Ask for a written quote. Any serious shop will give one on WhatsApp.

Wholesale and retail

Wholesale rates apply to larger quantities. Many items have a break at a full roll, a full bundle or a full bag. If you are close to a break, ask what the next quantity costs. Sometimes the whole roll is cheaper than three-quarters.

Retail buyers are welcome. You do not need to be a contractor to buy a metre of wire or a kilo of nails.

Common mistakes

• Buying on rate alone. Weight, gauge and coating decide quality.
• Not checking the cut. Measure the cut length before you load.
• Forgetting the small parts. Clamps, binding wire, nails and washers are bought last and needed first.
• Not asking about alternatives. The shop may stock a better or cheaper fit.
• Skipping the bill. Always take a bill. You will need it for returns and for warranty.
