Mosquito Net for Windows in Indore: Fibreglass, SS, Aluminium or GI?
Which mosquito mesh suits which window? Mesh count, wire gauge, rust, sun and rain compared, with a buying checklist from a Siyaganj mesh counter.

Most people buy mosquito net the way they buy a bucket. They ask for the cheapest roll and find out about the difference two monsoons later, when the corners have rusted through or the mesh has gone brittle in the sun.
The material you pick decides how long the net lasts and what it does for your airflow. Here is how the four common types compare.
The four materials
Fibreglass (PVC coated glass fibre)
The everyday choice for house windows. Woven glass fibre strands are coated in PVC, so the mesh is soft, light and cannot rust. It cuts with ordinary scissors and fits into a plastic or aluminium frame with a spline.
- Good for: bedrooms, living rooms, normal window frames.
- Watch for: tears from pets or sharp objects. It sags if the frame is not pulled tight.
- Colours: grey, black, green and white.
Stainless steel (SS) wire mesh
Fine woven steel wire. Much tougher than fibreglass. It resists chewing, cats and rats, and it shrugs off heat and wind.
- Good for: kitchens near the gas, ground floor windows, open balconies, anywhere pests are bigger than mosquitoes.
- Watch for: the price, and very fine mesh can cut airflow slightly. Ask for the wire grade. SS 304 is the one you want for outdoors.
- See SS fine mesh.
Aluminium wire mesh
Soft, bright and does not rust like steel. It is lighter than steel and a good middle option.
- Good for: humid rooms and balconies where rust is the problem.
- Watch for: it dents and creases more easily than steel.
- See aluminium wiremesh.
GI (galvanised iron) mesh
Mild steel with a zinc coat. The cheapest metal option and the usual choice for coolers and rough work.
- Good for: desert coolers, godowns, vents, areas where cost matters more than looks.
- Watch for: the zinc coat wears. Near the sea or in a damp bathroom it will rust in a few seasons.
- For insect screening see mosquito net (fine count, cut to your window). The GI wiremesh page is the coarse 15–100 mm range, not insect mesh.

Mesh count: what 16 x 16 means
Mesh count is the number of wires per inch in each direction. Higher means finer holes and better protection against small insects, but also less airflow.
| Use | Typical mesh |
|---|---|
| Normal windows and doors | 16 x 16 or 18 x 16 |
| Sandflies and midges | 20 x 20 and finer |
| Pests, rats, lizards | Heavier SS or GI wire |
Ask the shop to show the roll labelled. If a seller cannot tell you the count, do not buy it.
A quick comparison
| Fibreglass | SS | Aluminium | GI | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rust | Does not rust | Resists rust; depends on grade and conditions | Does not rust; can corrode in harsh conditions | Yes, over time |
| Strength | Low | High | Medium | High |
| Cost | Low | High | Medium | Low |
| Airflow | Good | Good | Good | Good |
| Looks | Neat | Very neat | Neat | Plain |

Buying checklist
- Measure the opening, not the old net. Frames are rarely square.
- Add 2 inches on every side for the spline and the pull.
- Ask for the roll width and match it so you cut one clean piece, not two.
- Check the weave. It should be even. Loose or wavy weave becomes a sag.
- Buy a spare metre. The first cut is always a practice run.
We keep fibreglass, SS, aluminium and GI rolls at the counter and will cut to your measurement while you wait. Bring the numbers or send them on WhatsApp and we will tell you what is in stock. See mosquito net.
FAQs
Which mosquito net lasts longest in Indore?
Stainless steel mesh of a suitable grade usually lasts longest, though life depends on the grade and the conditions. Fibreglass lasts several seasons with care. GI mesh near damp areas rusts first.
Can I fit a mosquito net myself?
Yes. A frame, a spline roller and scissors are enough for a window. Pull the mesh evenly, and trim after the spline is in.
What mesh size stops mosquitoes?
16 x 16 and finer holds mosquitoes out. For sandflies pick 20 x 20 or finer.
Do you cut mosquito net to size?
Yes. We cut on the counter by the metre or by the piece.
Is fibreglass mesh safe for children?
Insect mesh is for insect screening. It is not a child fall-prevention barrier. Where fall protection is needed, use appropriate window guards or another purpose-designed system.
