Pigeon Net for Balconies in Indore: Mesh Size, Thickness and How to Fix It So It Stays

Pigeons are not a cosmetic problem. Droppings corrode paint and metal, block drains and carry diseases. A balcony full of pigeons is also a balcony you cannot use.

A net is the surest fix, but only if it is the right net and fixed the right way. Most of the failures we see come from the second part.

Which net

Pigeon nets are made of nylon or HDPE (a polyethylene). They are knotted or knotless, and come in several mesh sizes and thicknesses.

• Nylon is soft and strong and is a common choice for balconies.
• HDPE is lighter and usually cheaper.

How long either lasts in sun depends on the maker's UV stabilisation, not on the polymer name alone. Ask for the maker's UV-stabilisation and warranty details before you compare.

• Colour: white, green and black. Dark nets are less visible from a distance.

Mesh size

The mesh must be small enough that a bird cannot push through or get its head in.

For pigeons alone, 1 inch is fine. For sparrows too, go to 0.75 inch.

Thickness

Thickness is quoted as number of strands or in mm or "ply". Thicker strands last longer in sun and resist cutting by beaks and claws. For a balcony that sees full sun, choose a thicker net. Thin nets sag, fray and are chewed through.

How to fix it

Most bad jobs fail on one of these points.

1. Measure the opening and add 6 inches on each side so the net can be tensioned.
2. Fix a frame of GI wire or thin rope around the edge. Use GI wire or wire rope for a strong anchor.
3. Fix hooks or eyes to the frame line. Spacing and anchor type depend on the wall (brick, concrete, metal) and on the net maker's instructions. Use anchors suited to the surface rather than nails.
4. Thread the net onto the frame with binding wire at every eye.
5. Pull it tight. A loose net lets birds in at the gaps, and it flaps and wears.
6. Close every gap. A bird will find a hole of 2 inches.
7. Leave no pocket where a bird can sit in a fold of net.

Net vs spikes

Pigeon spikes are for ledges, window sills and parapets where birds land. They are not a replacement for a net, because birds will still enter an open balcony.

Use both. A net closes the opening, spikes keep birds off the ledge outside it.

Life and care

How long a net lasts depends on its UV stabilisation, the strand thickness, the sun it sees and how well it is fixed. Ask the maker for the warranty or expected life. Check it after each monsoon, clip loose edges and tighten the frame. Replace it before it starts to fray, because a damaged net is an invitation.
